A Quick Thought

What is the best point in history to live?

As a historian, there are many many time periods I would love to visit, but if Ihad to  choose  one to live out the rest of my days I would choose one of the most boring (regardless of the era).

Why?

Great wars and calamities make for good reading and discussion, but the best time to live is what most of us would consider boring to read about. Life is not about great deeds worthy of chapters in a history book. Life is about each day’s cares and worries that shape the next day and the next. The eras of peace and prosperity should be the most celebrated. Thought no hold those who weathered such storms, I would not wish anyone to be forced to live through eras like the Great Depression, or the Dark Ages, or even the glories of World War Two.

To live a peaceful boring life is what most people want if they are truly honest with themselves. “There is a way which seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”

“A wise man is cautious and turns away from evil, But a fool is arrogant and careless.”

‭‭(Proverbs‬ ‭14:12, 16‬ ‭NASB‬‬)

  1. This post is interesting since lately my husband and I have been watching movies that reflect different times and ages. We both looked at each other and said we would NOT be able to survive those eras! Of course this is only because of what we know today. I think we are living in he most fabulous times currently where technology bridges so many gaps and keeps people connected. I also believe we are living in the most troublesome times as well. So many things like values and traditions are changing and some are very disturbing and my heart aches for the children. Never-the-less I don’t think I would change my now for anything in the world. But its nice from an educational standpoint to visit other eras by watching movies and reading literature. The past provides so many answers for the present. Lots of it makes sense how our current state of affairs came to be. Thanks for provoking this level of thought:-)

    1. What an amazing comment! You’re right that this is an amazing time to live. We enjoy so many luxuries today that other eras could only dream of. I know personally that without a hot shower and coffee in the morning I would be a very unhappy camper. And because of the Internet, we are all able to glean wisdom from those who came before. Another luxury we have that other eras did not. Thanks again for reading and commenting!
